Despite how modern and realistic the movies we have now are, there are still some black and white movies that continue to steal our hearts. It may have been decades, but we can never tire of them. It may be because of the strength of the characters, the plot, or the masterfully crafted story, but between these elements there is some magic in these movies that keeps us coming back. Here are 15 black and white movies worth watching!
1. The Third Man (1949)
One user said, “The Third Man. It still feels incredibly modern.”
Another replied: “Best movie ending scene ever.”
Finally, the third added: “Such a great movie. The Ferris wheel scene was great.”
2. The apartment (1960)
“Ohhh, The apartment!! I have to watch it again! Thanks for the reminder,” said one.
“Great list. The apartment in particular it’s one of my absolute favourites,’ replied another.
“I saw The apartment for the first time last week. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire second half. The script and acting were perfect throughout. The story was also quite timeless,” added the third.
3. 12 Angry Men (1957)
One user said, “12 Angry Men it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, and all they do is talk.”
“An absolutely perfect movie, IMO. Timeless and still relevant, tight script and great pacing, even though it’s a bunch of dudes talking in a room. What a great movie,” replied the second person.
“I was in high school and we had to read the book, which I thought was boring, and then we saw the movie and it blew me away. I rented it to watch again at Blockbuster and my dad gave me the weirdest look when I gave it to him,” added another.
4. Psychopath (1960)
One person stated: “This movie is so [dang] well that’s amazing. The shows are all decades ahead of their time.”
The second person replied, “What makes it cooler is that they didn’t have to shoot it in black and white, since they had color films from the 50s, but they chose to.”
5. Young Frankenstein (1974)
“Young Frankensteinif you like Mel Brooks comedies,” someone mentioned.
“It’s Frankenstein!!” answered another.
“Can’t recommend it enough, although it’s fair to point out that it’s a more modern film that was deliberately shot in black and white,” added the third.
6. The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Someone said, “The original Candidate of Manchuria.”
Another replied, “Oooooh Angela Lansbury is terrifying in this. RIP queen.”
Then the third added, “I scrolled for it. The garden club scene is so scary.”
7. The story of Philadelphia (1940)
One person said, “[The] History of Philadelphia and Raising the baby they are personal favorites.”
The second replied: “Can’t go wrong with K Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart in the same movie.”
Finally, the third added: “The dialogue is extremely well written [The] Philadelphia The story also includes the GOAT (Jimmy Stewart).
8. Roman holidays (1953)
“Roman holidays (1953) beautiful film,” someone said.
“This is one of my personal favorites. So sad and sweet,” replied another.
9. Night of the living dead (1968)
One user said, “Night of the living dead. OG.”
Another person replied, “Yes. I love this movie. The acting is great and I love using the shadows.”
“The pacing of this movie blows my mind. I’m used to older movies being a little slower and more methodical, which I like. But Night of the living dead it has some really modern rhythm IMO. It has a high risk escalation,” added another.
10. The Thin Man (1934)
Someone commented, “The Thin Man and its sequels. The chemistry between Powell and Loy is just great.”
Another replied, “I came here to say this! They were close friends off screen and it showed. Also, a solid example of a movie couple who really like each other.”
Then a third added: “My perfect ‘binge through a cold/flu to make you feel better series.’
11. Double compensation (1944)
“Double compensation it’s one of my all-time favorites,” someone shared.
“I scrolled to find this. Absolute classic, tight plot, razor sharp dialogue. The only problem is that it can be hard to sell people on a movie where the premise is based on insurance policies!” The second person answered.
The third then added: “I was hoping someone said that. Barbara Stanwyck is one of the best ever. It’s a classic story, but he makes it fresh.”
12. Sunset Blvd (1950)
“One of the best ever filmed,” said one.
“During COVID, we got a poster of ‘The 100 Greatest Movies Ever Made’ and slowly watched them all. I had seen most of them before, but not all. Sunset Blvd was one I hadn’t seen and I was blown away. Made the whole poster worth it,” replied another.
13. The Elephant Man (1980)
One person stated: “The Elephant Mana fantastic film but I’m not sure I could watch it again so sad.”
The second person replied: “Hard watch.”
14. Nosferatu (1922)
“Nosferatu it would color the film to suggest different times of the day. Also, the use of shadow was excellent,” commented one.
“It still stands as a horror film. There is something deeply disturbing about that,” one responded.
“What an incredible film. I saw it for the first time just a few years ago, and while I’ve never really found monster movies scary before, this movie scared the crap out of me,” added another.
15. Paper moon (1973)
One shared, “A wonderful and timeless film. Tatum O’Neal gives one of the best performances by child actors in this one.
Another replied: “I was hoping to see this. He gives the absolute best performance ever given by a child actor. A truly wonderful film.”
A third commenter agreed, “Absolutely love it, literally my favorite movie of all time, and I clicked through the comments hoping to find it. Paper moon it’s incredibly written, directed and acted by all involved.”
