- 3 sources of passive income
- $1,259.83 from dividends
- They dripped 18 stock/units in December
- 12 month portfolio return 5.51%
S&P 500 Total Return 12 months +23.53% for December 2023
S&P/TSX Composite Index 12 Months +11.34% January 2, 2024
Who would have thought 2023 would bring these kinds of returns.. Absolutely crazy.. Some of my accounts were run but when you include Algonquin it brings it way down. Let’s see what 2024 brings, will the magnificent 7 continue to bring the market? Time will tell
ZOE
December was a good month but somehow depressing. We really didn’t get any snow until New Year’s. It was warm and definitely not Christmassy.. Haha I guess I’m old school but I love a white Christmas.
As I mentioned before in my previous post at the beginning of the month we went to Florida – Universal, Disney and a cruise. The rest of the month I didn’t do much, but I started the process of taking over our landscape company. It’s exciting but with it probably comes a lot more work and hopefully more revenue.
I will change the company from sole proprietorship to limited liability company. Should be some great tax advantages and even more dividends! I will keep you posted as this develops.
Christmas was good and we are blessed to be around so much family for the holidays. The kids got lots of Barbies and some changing toys. I got socks, boxers, chocolate oranges and of course reis. Que – One Republic’s Good Life
New Year’s we went to a friend’s house, the boys played, the girls chatted, we ate great food, cracked a few beers and celebrated another year in this place we call earth.
Okay, let’s get to our December 2023 passive income
Raises/Cuts
I don’t think we’ve had any increases this month, but apart from Aecon, I’m sure every company in our portfolio has increased their dividend this year.
Total incremental income from dividend increases in 2023 – $194.96
Lowest increase overall for the year. Bryan Adam’s might say that the Algonquin dividend “cuts like a knife.” Without it we would be close to $500 and with 10k in forward revenue at the end of the year we would be close to a 5% dividend growth rate. Although we started 2023 with a forward income of $8,350.93 so I guess it would be higher. I don’t know how you would calculate that. Average of start and finish numbers?

18 shares/units Drip in December.
To say I was impressed with this month’s income chart would be an understatement. This was a steady increase compared to $1,150.03 in September. I really like how the portfolio has transformed over the years into better quality companies.
This month was our first payment from Allied Property. While I wouldn’t put it below the big moat quality companies, it has already done us very well in the month and a half we’ve had it. Will it continue like this? Who knows, but that special dividend is coming in January. Plus that special costco dividend! Sweet =)

Our Drips (Dividend Reinvestment Program) added $44.84 dollars to our forward income…. =)

Payment of private investments – $1000.00
1k per month, very nice!
Income from solar panels
In November (We always get paid a month later) our solar system produced 248 kWh. Since we carry a flat rate of 28.8 cents per kilowatt hour, Hydro One filed $66.69 in our checking account this month.
Last November the system was created $61.96, so we came out a little ahead. It will be interesting to see what December solar looks like in this climate.
Total income for 2023 – $2,106.67
The system was installed in January 2018
Total system cost ——–$32,396.46
Total income ——–$14,278.96

Amount to break —- $ —18,117.5
Last year’s solar income was 2,287.07 so we’re seeing a pretty decent drop in profits. I know my tree is growing, but is this a factor? I do not know. Maybe I should go over there and clean those panels again.
Total Passive Income December 2023 – $2,326.52
December 2022 Passive Income – $2,102.39
An increase of $224.13 year over year or a growth rate of 10.66%. Hey, that’s not bad at all. We are back to some growth after selling over 100k shares last October.
While it was a good move to deleverage, some of these sales are up and some are down. One thing that stands out is my rant about the world. Here we are a year later and things aren’t looking so bad for the things I was going on about. Maybe mass immigration, upcoming elections and ongoing wars will be different this time. He points out how there is always horrible news and political…
Totals for 2023
Dividends Year To Date Total – $9,424.32
Another Year of Passive Income to date – $14,870.51
Total Passive Income for 2023 —– $24,294.83
Year End Goal – $26,000 (93.44%)
Under target, but that’s okay. Last year we brought in $24,184.07. So it’s really not a huge jump if you just look at the numbers. But the thing is, we collected all these dividends from the 100k we sold last year. Our sales lost about 4k in dividend income and here we are.
8 years of investing from 0 to almost 25k per year. We see the growth and spikes in the chart above and with the power of 3, they will only grow faster. Drips, dividend increases and new capital.
December stock purchases
CoucheTard – ATD
A great company that treated us very well. The share price has risen well and annual dividend increases of 20% aren’t bad either. =) We added another 17 shares at a cost of $76.46 per share.
This adds $11.90 to our forward dividends.
Nutrien – Ntr
Our basic materials sector is one of our lower sectors and this position is also small. While technically not a moat company, it pretty much is. Unfortunately the business is extremely cyclical and here we are, near 52 week lows. The good thing is that I know the world will always need food and we need fertilizer to maximize those crops. This is Nutrien’s bread and butter. Another good thing, Nutrien likes to buy back shares and I’m pretty sure they will benefit from these current prices in that regard.
- December 31, 2018 shares outstanding – 608.54 million
- October 21, 2023 shares outstanding – 494.55 million
Rbc says Nutrien is undervalued and currently gives it a fair value of 99.75 per share. If we were to reach that price, that’s a 25.16% return without that dividend.
We added another 13 shares at 76.19 per share. This adds $27.56 to our forward dividends.
In total we added 39.46 in forward income this month.
Total added forward dividend income from purchases in 2023 – $1,608.14
Bitcoin
To say that bitcoin has had a good year would be an understatement. Wow! 167.17%
We decided to go with shakepay because it is regulated in Canada and you shake the phone everyday to get some free sats (bitcoins). They recently changed the way shaking sats are done. You get a certain amount per day now

Etf Monthly Minimum Purchase $250
- This month we added 0 more xaw etf units.
- Questrade* is great because it offers free etf trading and cheaper stock trading options than most Canadian brokers. $250.00 a month would kill us if we needed to pay high transaction fees.
- * Please note that the questrade link is an affiliate link and at no extra cost to you, I would receive a small payment if you sign up. However, you could get $50 in free trades using my affiliate link.
We didn’t buy xaw this month either.
December 2023 Passive Income Conclusion
I’m happy with the progress we’ve made in 2023. Hopefully the market will slow down a bit as we’re still in the build-up phase and some of these pes are just crazy. haha I wish you nothing but the best in 2024! How did you do this year? are there targets for 2024?
Cheers
The view is best outside your comfort zone. This new year, it’s time to check it out – unknown

Hi, I’m Rob, creator of Passive Canadian Income.
In 2011 my wife and I had nearly $60,000 in debt and a negative net worth of $7,000. Through hard work and financial education we paid for all this. We are now focusing on growing our passive income streams to make money work for us.
