Tired of the traditional 9-to-5?
Would you like to be able to work from anywhere like you see all the time on Instagram and TikTok?
Tired of sacrificing all your available time for a small fee in return and how are the endless restrictions on when you can take time off?
I have been there.
Back in 2018, I was in a 9-5 I hated, paid £22,000 a year in a supervisory role and just wanted to travel the world with my partner and create more out of life.
Fast forward five years later and life got even better than I could have ever imagined when I made my first goal of making £500 a month in my Virtual Assistant business.
Since starting my online business, I have helped over 450 clients build their own freedom based business and go from being a Virtual Assistant and Social Media Manager to a Business and Marketing Coach making multiple six figures and helping my clients to they do the same.
In this week’s post I’m going to show you how to travel the world and make money at the same time, helping you start your own business too.
Because I’m not just a “special case” scenario, I didn’t get lucky…I just got the job done.
My clients are leaving their 9-5’s faster than ever and seeing consistent months of high cash in their coaching and service based businesses, which shows you how powerful this could be for you too.
All it requires is some clarity, consistency and commitment on your part.
How to become a digital nomad with no skills
First, I want to answer this statement/question as it is something I often come across with new or aspiring business owners and those of you looking to quit your 9-5.
I think this is more of a mindset issue than a lack of skill.
Because you can I think so you don’t have the skills to start your own business, but in fact, your current career could have a bunch of transferable skills that are highly desirable in the online space.
For example, if you are thinking of becoming a Virtual Assistant then this job is varied and could be the right move for many of you reading this blog.
I majored in Social Media Management because I had a marketing degree and loved working in social media. But there are technology VAs, administrative VAs, content-only VAs, and some getting even more niche/specialized.
Even if you work in a typically corporate industry, there is room to transition into the self-employed life and work from anywhere. The internet is full of lawyers, accountants, HR professionals and more.
How to start your internet business
So now you can see all the opportunities that await you, let’s talk about a few things you need to start your online business on the right track.
Step One: Identify your skill set
This is a little exercise for you.
Think about your current role and all the previous professional roles you’ve had and make a list of everything you’ve done and the skills you’ve learned.
Next, make a list of any training or formal qualifications you have, as these could be a required skill.
You can also think of things you are naturally good at. Maybe you’re a wizard at admin tasks or you’re efficient and organized. You may be great with systems and technology or have a passion for social media.
These are all skills that are highly sought after in the online business space.
Step Two: Nail Your Position
Next, you’ll want to consider what industry you’ll be working in.
For example, if you want to become a Virtual Assistant or Social Media Manager and you have a background in the beauty industry, you may want to work for those in that industry as you already know a lot about how this position works.
There can be a lot of pressure on new online business owners to get up to speed. However, if you’re new to the online space, you might not know exactly what industry you like to work in yet, and that’s okay.
In this case, I encourage you to do some messy work and try working in a few different positions until you find your sweet spot.
If you’re looking for more support in building your niche, my online coaching program, CCA, covers exactly how to nail your niche and get crystal clear clarity on who your ideal customer is.
Step Three: Identify Your Ideal Customer
Which brings us to the third step, WHERE you want to work together.
In the example above, I used the beauty industry as an example for your niche, and in that niche, your ideal client could be female salon owners who are fully booked and want to outsource tasks to a team so they can focus in scaling their business or taking some time off.
Get really specific when thinking about who would be your absolute dream to work with.
What are their goals/aspirations? What are they struggling with right now? How do they like to work? Some people like to work with clients who allow more creative freedom and others prefer more guidance. Think about what will work best for you here, and remember that it’s okay for this to evolve over time.
Step Four: Landing Customers
Once you’ve completed this step, it’s time to start promoting yourself on social media and land your first client.
This may seem daunting at first, but remember that everyone has to start somewhere and the sooner you start, the sooner you can start enjoying the benefits of owning your own business.
I wrote a whole blog post on how to use attraction marketing to get customers so you can sell without feeling lazy, but if you want more ideas on how to get your first customers then I made a YouTube video on How to Land Your First Five Clients as a Social Media Manager or Virtual Assistant.
Is the online business space saturated?
Before I wrap up this week’s post, this is something I also wanted to address because it’s a valid fear that can come up as a new online business owner.
Here is my take on the “saturated” market.
Yes, there are many service providers and coaches out there, but there is also a HUGE demand for them.
The world is moving towards a $100 billion creator economy, and more and more people are looking to us for support to help them scale. Whether this is through coaching or mentoring, or as a service provider.
Even if you don’t want to work in this particular niche, the possibilities are still endless as businesses look for ways to scale online and every day thousands of business owners are starting up and looking for people like you to help them grow.
I hope this week’s post showed you that starting an online business and becoming a digital nomad doesn’t have to be a pipe dream.
