Keeping the momentum going in the Blogging series
I find it very easy to get distracted by the many different elements of maintaining a blog and the allure of social media, to the point where I struggle to do the core element – creating content.
See how setting aside specific hours to write can not only regain your momentum, but also transform the trajectory of your blog.
The power of a writing routine
Establishing a writing routine isn’t just about discipline. it’s about creating a space for creativity and productivity to flourish. Research shows that routines can significantly reduce stress, enhance focus, and boost creativity. Adopting a consistent writing schedule not only helps you manage your blog more efficiently, but also fosters your mental well-being.
I do this by setting aside time each day (usually at the same time each day) to write but also by setting aside longer hours on a weekly basis (i.e. currently experimenting with making Mondays a “writing day”). I’ve also sometimes taken even longer periods of time to get away for the sole purpose of writing (ie for a weekend). I find that setting this time aside, away from distractions – and even away from being completely online – really elevates the quality and style of my writing.
In fact, if you’re interested in my daily life, here’s a day in the life of a ProBlogger (me).
Finding your prime writing time
Everyone’s creative peak doesn’t happen in the morning. Experiment with writing at different times to discover when you are most productive. Pay attention to your body’s natural rhythms—your circadian rhythms play a key role in determining your most fertile periods of creativity.

One thing I’ve done in the past to find peak writing times and different states of productivity is to keep a blog journal to break down your blogging routine.
Setting Realistic Goals
A writing session without a goal is like a ship without a compass. Set achievable goals for each session, whether it’s word count, post length, or number of posts. This clarity will guide your efforts and increase your sense of accomplishment.
ProBlogger psychologist Ellen Jackson has some great behavior change tips in How to Smash Your Blogging Goals in Just 5 Days.
Something I do every day, even two or three times a day, is to critically analyze:
“What am I doing right now that is worth it? Are those three hours I just spent on social media bringing me closer to my goals—and could they—or are they taking me away from them?”
This kind of questioning has become an automatic part of my daily work routine. By paying conscious attention to it, it has become second nature. While this doesn’t always stop me from getting distracted, it does help me stay focused.
Minimize distractions for maximum productivity
Distractions are the main nemesis of productivity. In a world where every ping could lead down a rabbit hole, creating a distraction-free writing environment becomes vital. Consider using social media blocking apps, creating a designated writing space, or wearing noise-cancelling headphones to maintain focus on your writing.
Here are some posts from ProBlogger writers that cover other ways to focus on writing amid distractions:
